Claudia's Quinceanera
« on: October 16, 2007, 10:11:33 AM »

I'm a moron.   Embarrassed  My friend called me last week and asked me if I wanted to come to her birthday party.  It was to be held Saturday afternoon at her church.  Her mom is very religious so I didn't think it was odd to have a birthday party at their church.  Mrs. Guapo doesn't like the mom so I was to go alone.  My intention was to just pop in, drop the present, say felicidades, grab a piece of cake and get out.  I showed up wearing jeans, t-shirt and sneakers.  I didn't even shave.

When I got there, I saw the mom.  She was dressed in a maroon evening gown.  It was then that I realized what this was.  It was my friend's quinceanera.  Her brother was wearing a suit with pink shirt and pink tie.  I'd never seen him in a suit before.  The mom introduced me to the preacher and his wife and a few other people.  I apologized for my appearance.  I didn't know.  They said not to worry about it.  They didn't seem offended at all.

Claudia was in the back room.  No one was to see her before the ceremony, but they let me see her.  She's about four foot nothing, round and with a triple chin, but she cleans up nice, and she looked gorgeous in a pink dress.  Her little sister was all duded up too and complaining that she didn't like wearing a dress.  There were some teenage bridesmaids (?) there too, all spiffed up.  I didn't know them.  Claudia said that she was nervous.  I told her that she's an adult now and must learn to do these things.

So I went into the sanctuary.  Some musicians were setting up.  One guy had a Gibson ES-335.  Then the bridesmaids (?) entered followed by little sister and a little boy.  Then came mom and her current husband.  Then came Claudia and her big brother with the pink shirt.  We went through the ceremony.  The guy with the ES-335 couldn't play guitar to save his life.  I don't know what a guy who sucked so bad was doing with such an expensive guitar.

Claudia is an excellent singer.  I've got some video of her in my kitchen when she was 12 years old singing beautifully.  She stood up and sang two traditional Spanish hymns.  Her voice had matured a lot since the last time I heard her sing.  She had said she was nervous, but she obviously wasn't nervous singing.  She was beaming with confidence.  This was her element.  This is where she lives.

Then we went in for some alimentos.  The vittles weren't that good.  I wasn't going to eat much anyway because Mrs. Guapo had some chilis rellenos back at the ranch, and she makes the best chilis rellenos I've ever had.  I was the only white guy there.  There was a black lady (the foster parent of Claudia's pink-shirted brother - a long story) and three Filipinas.  The Filipinas are old friends of mine that I hadn't seen in almost a year so I sat with them.  The black lady was there.  I complimented her on how well she has been feeding big brother.  He gained about 50 pounds since last Christmas when I saw him last.

All in all it was a good party.  It was nice to see my friend being honored.  She's had a tough 15 years.  She is an anchor baby, born to an illegal immigant mom.  I don't know her dad.  He didn't even show up at the party.  She says that she rarely sees him.  Her mom had six kids that she can't take care of.  She's spent time in a homeless shelter.  She's moved from apartment to apartment from school to school.  Despite that, she's doing well in school.  She made the honor roll last year.  Now she's taking Algebra II.  I always tell her that she can do well in school.  If she works hard she can do it.

Pardon if I may say so.....but there are no 'anchor babies' on the face of this planet nor is any person 'illegal' native, immigrant and/or migrant...

Sorry, but that anchor baby comment is really offensive... 075
