Dobbs decided to castrate himself to appear more mainstream. Now he's being asked about immigration reform? Please. Send him back to his ranch/compound with the bulletproof vinyl siding.

I think Brand X may find itself light a few minorities if this keeps up.
Then again, if Willie says anything, he could find himself minus a few die-hard racists he needs to keep his tit wet.
What's a right nutter to do...?

Apparently. Especially when your syndication requires several hundred words a week for your bread and butter.
There are times Navarrette comes off as a petulant child, and this is one of them.
Right now, we have several pressing issues that have to be addressed; two wars and an economy with double-digit unemployment. (we also have an issue with idiots playing to their redneck constituency, but that's not going away anytime soon.)
Obama has to make sure the economy is well on the way to recovery before any immigration reform is introduced - it's just a simple political fact of life. We're getting there, but there's no concrete signs of economic recovery until at best the end of the second quarter, or the summer.
In the mean time, ICE hasn't made those PR raids in a while, and Gestapo Joe is under investigation. The anti's are tearing at each other's throats, and the anti-immigrant rhetoric has calmed down considerably (no doubt due to the arrest of that murderous nitwit Shawna Forde.)
Unlike Navarrette, I think the Administration has a plan, and will introduce it once a few irons are taken out of the fire.

Therein lies the rub - Willie's Weenies are all bent out of shape over nothing. For every clip he pulls up, a hundred more have all-white casts doing all-white things in their all-white world. Minorities star in a disproportionately small number of movies, and when they do get a role in a movie, it's usually as a gang member, maid, criminal, or homeless.
Willie is playing to his audience, a band of low-rent white trash who think they're the only ones suffering in this recession, and all their woes are caused by non-whites.

Ms Gelmini said: "This move is not racism. Schools should be places of integration and our education institutes are ready to accept children from all cultures and from all over the world.
"At the same time, Italian schools must maintain with pride their historic traditions and continue to teach the culture of our country. Citizenship classes are a step in the right direction as they teach respect, history and laws of the Italian culture." No, it's racism and nationalism, something Italy piddled with at the start of the last century. Mussolini much, Ms. Gelmini?

Yes, what about the El Salvadorans, the Hatians, the Colombians, etc.
This solution should surprise no one, as Schwatzenegger's father was a Nazi party member and also in the SA (those quaint brownshirts everyone's heard about.)
Guess the goose-step doesn't fall far from the tree.

Of course, the All White, All Night bubbas are having hissies about this. Had the earthquake devastated France or England, they wouldn't bat an eye.
Now, for shelter, I've heard a lot of good things about those sturdy all-steel cargo containers. They're everywhere, most are littering up whatever port they landed in, and at 8'x8'x20' they have more than enough room for a small apartment. Anyone who can figure out how to prefab insulation, plumbing, and electricity into one cheaply will become a millionaire.

I have to wonder what they really think is going to happen with this re-opening. I understand Ramos wants his name cleared, but after all, he did shoot a man while he was running away (Major Mistake #1,) tampered with evidence at a shooting scene (Major Mistake #2,) conspired to cover up a shooting while on duty (Major Mistake #3,) and lied about it when the incident was investigated (Major MAJOR Mistake.)
There's a reason a jury convicted him the first time, there's a reason the conviction was upheld, and there's a reason Bush didn't straight out pardon him and Compean.
Give up while your ahead, Ramos. You've got a decent job (pipe fitting isn't exactly a minimum-wage job,) you got out of prison before your wife started looking elsewhere for a breadwinner, and you're walking around without the aid of a colostomy bag, which is more than you can say about Aldrete.
Count your blessings and sac up like a man. Liddy's been doing it for over thirty years, so can you.

As a Cyan-American, I find that last bit insulting...
Facial-recognition software is still in its infancy, so it's no wonder it's having issues picking up details on people's faces. Also, it may be that the US demanded the algotithm be "dumbed down" so as not to work as effectively as the software they use at airports and stadiums, sorta like the way GPS systems were hobbled by the military when they first went on the market.
As for that bit about speech recognition: what program is the writer using that's 99% effective? Microsoft tried to tell us the Office speech-recognition software was 87% effective "right out of the box." Ask anyone who tried to train that bad bear just how much of a lie that was.

in fairness, if Baptiste had an emergency, she really should have called the court and let them know what was going on. She could have had her hearing moved to another day and probably been sworn in as a US citizen by now. And I really have to wonder why she and her husband didn't hire an attorney to appeal the order due to extraordinary circumstance.
Having said that, I do hope Ms. Baptiste gets her hearing before her stay is up, and I hope she's allowed to stay. We don't have enough teachers in this country that we can toss them aside willy-nilly.

Sad part Porter is those two idiots might have gotten away with it if they'd just 'fessed up and left the shooting area alone. Aldrete could have complained all day about these two using him for target practice, and it would have been a "he said/he said" situation.
However, Ramos and Compean lied about the incident, destroyed evidence, then lied under oath.
Besides, if Aldrete did have a gun, why in the hell didn't Compean blow him away with the shotgun?
And if Aldrete had a gun, how is it that Compean the Clown is alive today?
Those two should leave well enough alone.

"He's a solid member of the community," Indorf said. "He's entitled to do what he wants." Bully for him. His customers also have the right to not frequent his store. Let's see which one keeps the doors open: an English-Only policy, or book sales. I give it a week.

Amazing diametric showing our love/hate relationship with our immigrants.
On the eastern shore, we lift Lady Liberty's lamp and tear up to the thrilling poem The New Colossus. We welcomed everyone from the European continent, provided they had a little money in their pockets and a clean bill of health. However, on the West Coast, we reviled the Chinese and stole land from the Mexicans wholesale.
I think restoring Angel Island should be a priority for the Obama Administration.

MAIN / General Discussion / Re: Navarrette: The semantic debate over 'illegal' immigrants is a waste of time

Exactly.
If one frequently drives over the speed limit, it doesn't make one an "illegal driver," nor does murder, armed robbery, or embezzlement make one an "illegal," even if the person is branded a felon, which includes many anti-immigrant personalities, especially one G. Gordon Liddy.
"illegal aliens" is a term from the Cold War Era, and needs to be removed from the government's lexicon.
Oh, BTW: Welcome aboard, Cuddy.
