Immigration debate unites diverse Latino community

The intense debate over illegal immigration is putting more Latinos on edge and pulling a diverse Latino community closer together, according to a national survey with implications for Northeast Ohio.

The Pew Hispanic Center found a new "feeling of vulnerability" among the nation's 45 million people of Hispanic descent, just over half of whom worry that they or a family member or a close friend could be deported.

Meanwhile, stepped-up enforcement of immigration laws is uniting Latino groups that once took more divergent views on immigration, according to the center's 2007 National Survey of Latinos, released Thursday.
