moneyAmerica's young Latinos should continue to be a hot market for businesses to target as their numbers grow and their wealth increases, according to a study by the Tomas Rivera Policy Institute.

"They haven't hit their peak in expenditures, and they haven't hit their peak in income," said Harry Pachon, president of the Los Angeles-based institute, who presented the Merrill Lynch-sponsored report, "Increasing Wealth in the Latino Community," to Houston's business leaders Thursday.

But more than young Latinos, the Hispanic community in general, from low-wage earning immigrants to the affluent, is increasingly being courted by advertisers, Pachon said.

from Associated Content:

This story begins probably very much the same as it did for many Mexicans living in Memphis , TN.

At fifteen minutes until 5:00 a.m., Saturday morning, March 10th 2007, Mayra Roque woke up and started getting dressed. The twenty two year old, single mother, then woke up her three year old, American born daughter, Yuliza, with a kiss on the cheek.

"Despiertate, baby."(Wake up, baby)

The early morning birds were already singing and pulling worms from the rain drenched soil outside of their small, one bedroom apartment in South East Memphis, TN. Mayra handed some clothes to Yuliza.

ImageRancho Liborio, the biggest Hispanic grocery store to arrive in Colorado Springs, opened quietly at 1660 S. Circle Drive in March.

Low prices were the main attraction for Francisca Becerra, who dropped by the store during a recent afternoon and picked up bread and fabric-softener sheets.

She said she buys few Mexican products at Rancho Liborio, but she might if the prices were better than other markets.

Shoppers Angela Almendares and Angel Ortega had several bags full of traditional Mexican foods such as yucca, cilantro, melon and tortillas. Price was an important consideration.

"It's cheaper than the competition," Almendares said.

Wal-Mart also has a wide selection of Mexican items, she said, but sometimes its prices are higher.

"The grand opening will be May 18," said Dan Solomon, store manager. "We will be having a huge party in the parking lot with lots of store specials."

Bush lauds Mexico, Mexican Americans as candidates vie for Hispanic votes

May 5, 2008

Cinco de MayoWASHINGTON - President Bush wished a gathering of dinner guests a "Feliz Cinco de Maya" Monday in his final White House celebration of the Mexican holiday — slightly erring in his Spanish, but serving up a reminder of how he snared Hispanic votes in the last presidential election.

While the heated immigration debate has caused some strain between the United States and Mexico, Bush was more conciliatory Monday. He said Cinco de Mayo is a chance to prove the two countries are "connected by more than geography." He referred correctly to the day, Cinco de Mayo, in other parts of his brief speech.

"We share an interest in making sure our people are prosperous and safe," Bush said of Mexico. "In America, we deeply value the culture and contributions of Mexican Americans. The United States is a richer place, a more vibrant place because people who claim Mexican heritage are now called United States citizens. ... We consider ourselves fortunate that Mexico is a friend and a neighbor."

McCain courts Hispanic voters

Tuesday, 06 May 2008

from CNN:

PoliticsSen. John McCain said Monday the tenor of the immigration debate has hurt the way Hispanic voters view the Republican Party.

"I believe the majority of Hispanics share our view that the border must be secured, and the border must be secured first," McCain said in Phoenix, Arizona.

"But they also want us to have an attitude which I think most Americans do, that these are God's children and they must be taken care of."

The senator from Arizona used Cinco de Mayo as a launching pad for a new Spanish-language Web site on Monday, and he emphasized his stance on immigration and border security as he tried to court the Hispanic vote.

By PEGGY HARRIS, Associated Press Writer

The Caduceus, traditional symbol of the Medical ArtsWal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, announced Monday it would expand its discounted prescription drug program to offer 90-day supplies for $10 and add several women's medications at a discount. It also said it would lower the price of more than 1,000 over-the-counter drugs.

The move marks the third phase of a company program that began in 2006 to provide a 30-day supply of generic prescription drugs for $4. The Bentonville-based company said the program has saved customers more than $1 billion.

With the expansion, the company began filling prescriptions Monday for up to 350 generic medications at $10 for a 90-day supply at Wal-Mart, Neighborhood Market and Sam's Club pharmacies in the U.S. Almost all the prescription generics in the company's $4 program were included in the expanded $10 offer, said Wal-Mart senior vice president John Agwunobi.
